Dr. Zahraa Ghanim Ahmed

Biography:

Dr. Zahraa Ghanim Ahmed is a Consultant Anesthesiologist and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) specialist. She graduated from Al-Mustansiriya University College of Medicine in Baghdad, Iraq in 1997 and went on to receive her High Diploma Degree in Anesthesia and Intensive Care from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine in 2004.

In 2004-2010, she worked as a Specialist (Head of Department) in Anesthesia & ICU at Al Khansaa Teaching Hospital, which specializes in pediatric surgery and Obstetrics & Gynecology. During this period, she gained extensive experience in anesthetic procedures for both neonates and adults, as well as in painless labor. In 2011, she was awarded a Diploma in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management from the University Montpellier 1 in France while employed at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in Muscat, Oman. During her time there, she was proficient in performing various regional neuraxial anesthetics and peripheral nerve blocks, including spinal, continuous and epidural blocks for postoperative and labor pain control. In 2022, she was granted a DESIAC.

In the past three years, Dr. Zahraa has worked extensively in the ICU setting at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and NMC Specialty Hospital, where she independently managed complex medical and surgical cases with both invasive and non-invasive ventilation, using conventional and new modalities. She is experienced in performing various invasive procedures, including arterial cannulation, and central venous catheters insertion using ultrasonography.

Dr. Zahraa  is also actively involved in the care of critically ill patients in COVID-19 wards, deeply involved in treating critical care cases since the pandemic began. She is a member of the European Society of Anesthesia & Intensive Care Unit since 2017 and is interested in teaching junior and senior medical students and nurse staff. She regularly updates her skills and knowledge by attending conferences, workshops and webinars. In 2018, she was awarded the Best Doctor Recognition of Outstanding in Anesthesia Department and ICU at SQUH.
