Profile

About Dr. Adil

Dr. Adil is a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon whose practice spans both heart and lung surgery, with a particular specialisation in thoracic surgical oncology and minimally invasive approaches. He has performed more than 1,000 cardiac and thoracic operations, and has introduced a number of new procedures to Oman — principally in minimally invasive thoracic and cardiac surgery.

He graduated in Medicine from Sultan Qaboos University in 2001 with High Honours, and completed his residency training in Cardiac Surgery at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, in 2010. He then undertook an advanced fellowship in Thoracic Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York — one of the world’s leading cancer centres — from 2010 to 2011.

From 2011 to 2012 Dr. Adil worked as a Clinical Associate at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where he trained in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and aortic surgery. He returned to Oman in 2012 as a Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, and in 2015 was appointed Head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery there.

He holds Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) and Fellowship of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP), and consults in Arabic and English.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A cardiologist diagnoses and treats heart conditions with medication and catheter-based procedures. A cardiothoracic surgeon operates on the heart, lungs and chest. Dr. Adil is a surgeon, and also performs transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Cancers and tumours of the lung and chest, pleural and chest wall disease, coronary artery disease requiring surgery, heart valve disease including aortic stenosis, and disease of the thoracic aorta.
It is surgery performed through small incisions rather than a large chest opening, which generally means less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery. Dr. Adil introduced a number of these procedures to Oman.
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation is a way of replacing a narrowed aortic valve using a catheter, usually through an artery in the groin, without opening the chest. It is often used for patients for whom conventional valve surgery carries higher risk. Dr. Adil trained in TAVI at the Cleveland Clinic.
