About Dr. Anna

Dr. Anna is a Senior Consultant Clinical Geneticist at Muscat Private Hospital, with a background in paediatrics and neonatology and more than 50 years in medicine. She has spent much of her career in Oman, where she helped build the country's neonatal and genetic services.

Dr. Anna graduated from Kiev Medical University in 1972. She went on to earn the Diploma in Child Health (DCH) in Dublin, Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in London, and a PhD in Medical Genetics, with research focused on genetic blood disorders, congenital anomalies and population genetics.

In Oman she played a key role in establishing the country's first neonatal unit at Khoula Hospital, and later contributed to the development of neonatal and paediatric services at the Royal Hospital. She led the establishment of the National Programme for the Control of Genetic Blood Disorders and the national genetic counselling services, and was instrumental in developing the National Genetic Center.

She has published more than 100 scientific papers and has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Union Research Commission. Her work was recognised with a WHO Award in 2005 and the Hamdan Award for Distinguished Personalities in the Arab World in 2012.

Her clinical work centres on diagnosing inherited conditions in children and families, including chromosomal disorders, rare diseases, developmental delay and dysmorphic syndromes. She also provides genetic counselling, helping couples and families understand their risk of passing on a condition, with carrier screening, prenatal genetic counselling and assessment of inherited cancer risk.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A clinical geneticist diagnoses conditions that are inherited or caused by changes in a person's genes or chromosomes. This involves taking a detailed family history, examining the patient, and arranging and interpreting genetic tests where they will help. The geneticist then explains what the result means for the patient and for other family members.
A referral is worth considering if your child has a birth defect, developmental delay, unusual physical features, a suspected rare condition, or a condition already known to run in the family. A genetic diagnosis does not always change treatment, but it often explains what is happening, guides care, and tells parents the chance of it happening again in a future pregnancy.
Genetic counselling is a consultation that helps you understand a genetic condition in your family, the chance of passing it on, and the options available, such as carrier testing or prenatal testing. Dr. Anna explains the information clearly and leaves decisions to you and your family.
Carriers are usually healthy. When both parents carry the same condition, in each pregnancy there is a 1 in 4 chance the baby will have the condition, a 1 in 2 chance the baby will be a healthy carrier, and a 1 in 4 chance the baby will be neither. These chances are the same in every pregnancy. Dr. Anna can explain the testing and planning options available to you.
Most cancers are not inherited, but a small proportion are linked to a gene change passed down in families. If several relatives have had cancer, particularly at a young age or of the same type, Dr. Anna can assess whether a hereditary cancer syndrome is likely and whether genetic testing would be useful.
Yes. Alongside children and newborns, Dr. Anna sees adults and couples for carrier screening, family planning, inherited cancer risk and other inherited conditions.
Please bring any previous genetic or blood test results, medical reports, and as much information as you can about relatives who have had the same or similar conditions.
