About Dr. Ramanathan

Dr. Ramanathan widely known to his patients as Dr. Ram Sethu is a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the treatment of sports injuries, with four decades of experience in general orthopaedics and sports medicine.

He is credited with establishing the first Sports Medicine service in Oman, which he founded at Khoula Hospital in 1990 and which has run successfully ever since. He went on to serve as Senior Consultant in Orthopaedics and Head of the Arthroscopy and Sports Injuries Unit at Khoula Hospital for 26 years.

Dr. Ramanathan completed his undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MS) training at Stanley Medical College, Chennai, before moving to the United Kingdom in 1980, where he obtained his basic FRCS and his FRCS (Orth) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was awarded the MCh Orth by the University of Liverpool in 1986, and later completed the AO Fellowship in Trauma at the University Cantonal Hospital in Geneva. He has also undertaken specialist training in arthroscopy and sports injury treatment at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York and at the Mayo Clinic in the United States.

His clinical practice centres on the knee ligament injury and reconstruction, meniscal tears, arthroscopic surgery and patellofemoral pain alongside lower limb surgery and the everyday orthopaedic complaints that bring most patients to clinic, particularly knee pain and low back pain. He is a member of the Asian and International Federations of Sports Medicine, and has been recognised with an award for founding sports medicine services in Oman.
