About Dr. Ghalib

Dr. Ghalib is a Senior Consultant Urological Surgeon specialising in oncological and minimally invasive urology.

He obtained his BSc in Health Sciences and his MD from Sultan Qaboos University in 2004, and went on to gain the MRCS of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2010. He completed residency training in urology and was awarded the French board certificate (DES) in 2014.

He then undertook a structured two-year fellowship specialising in oncological and minimally invasive urology, completing the French DESC certificate and the European Board of Urology qualification (FEBU) in 2016.

Returning to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, he contributed to the introduction of a number of laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures for both cancer and non-cancer urological conditions, and to the development of the hospital’s minimally invasive urology service.

His practice covers endoscopic and minimally invasive treatment of urinary tract stones, surgery for urological cancers, laparoscopic urological surgery, endoscopic treatment of the prostate and urethra, surgery for testicular conditions, and the investigation of blood in the urine and lower urinary tract symptoms.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Ghalib is a Senior Consultant Urological Surgeon with subspecialty training in urological cancer surgery and minimally invasive urology. His practice covers kidney, bladder, prostate and testicular cancer, urinary stone disease, prostate and urinary flow problems, and the investigation of urinary symptoms.
This depends on the size, position and composition of the stone. Small stones often pass on their own with fluids and medication. Others may be treated with shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), which breaks the stone from outside the body, or with ureteroscopy or keyhole surgery through the back (PCNL) for larger stones. The options that apply to your stone will be explained after imaging.
Laparoscopic surgery is carried out through several small incisions using a camera and fine instruments, rather than one large incision. For suitable patients this generally means less pain after the operation and a shorter stay in hospital. Many kidney and ureteric operations can be done this way.
Not necessarily. Where the tumour is small and favourably placed, a partial nephrectomy removes the tumour while preserving the rest of the kidney and its function. Whether this is possible depends on the size and position of the tumour and on your kidney function, and is assessed on your scans before any decision is made.
Yes. Blood in the urine, whether visible or found on a urine test, should always be investigated even if it happens only once and causes no pain. Assessment usually includes imaging of the kidneys and a cystoscopy to examine the bladder. Many causes turn out to be minor, but it is important to rule out the serious ones.
Please bring any previous scans and reports (ultrasound, CT or MRI), previous operation and discharge summaries, recent blood and urine test results, any biopsy or pathology reports, and a list of your current medications, including any blood thinners.
