About Dr. Hilal

Dr. Hilal is a Senior Consultant Adult Endocrinologist and Diabetologist with more than 22 years of experience in managing endocrine conditions in adults.

He graduated from Sultan Qaboos University and completed his specialty training through the Oman Medical Specialty Board. He went on to complete higher specialty and fellowship training in endocrinology and diabetes at the University of Adelaide in Australia in 2006.

His practice covers the full range of adult endocrinology: type 1 and type 2 diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy and diabetes with obesity, thyroid disease including overactive and underactive thyroid, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer, and disorders of the parathyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands.

He also performs thyroid ultrasound and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration, allowing thyroid nodules to be assessed and sampled within the endocrine clinic rather than through a separate referral.

Endocrine conditions are usually long-term, and much of Dr. Hilal’s work involves ongoing review — adjusting treatment as circumstances change, and working with patients over years rather than single appointments.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

An endocrinologist treats conditions of the hormone-producing glands — the thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands — and diabetes. Because hormones affect the whole body, symptoms can be wide-ranging: tiredness, weight change, palpitations, mood change, bone problems or changes in periods and fertility.
Thyroid nodules are common and most are not cancer. Assessment usually involves blood tests to check thyroid function and an ultrasound to look at the nodule. Depending on its appearance and size, a fine needle aspiration may be recommended, where a very fine needle takes a small sample for analysis. Dr. Hilal performs both the ultrasound and the needle sampling.
A fine needle aspiration uses a needle finer than one used for a blood test to take cells from a thyroid nodule, guided by ultrasound. It takes only a few minutes, does not require a general anaesthetic, and most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. You can usually go home straight afterwards.
Yes. Diabetes changes over time, and treatment that worked well for years may need adjusting. A specialist review is also useful if your readings are difficult to control, if you are experiencing frequent low blood sugars, if you are planning a pregnancy, or if complications are developing.
Yes. Both pre-existing diabetes and gestational diabetes can be managed in pregnancy, and good control matters for both mother and baby. Care is usually shared with your obstetric team, with more frequent monitoring and treatment adjusted as pregnancy progresses.
Please bring recent blood test results, a list of your current medications and doses, blood glucose readings or download data if you monitor at home, any previous thyroid scans or reports, and details of any family history of thyroid or endocrine conditions.
