Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Interventional radiology treats conditions through very small punctures rather than open surgery, using imaging such as X-ray, ultrasound or CT to guide fine instruments to the right place inside the body. Many procedures are done under local anaesthetic with sedation, and patients often go home the same day or after one night. What are the advantages of treatment by Interventional Radiology?Minimally invasive procedures compared to operationsFast recovery timeMinimal risk and complications compared to surgeryLess painMajority of procedures are done under local anaesthesia
Most interventional radiology procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, often with sedation to keep you comfortable, so a general anaesthetic is usually not needed. What applies to your procedure will be explained beforehand.
Fibroid embolization blocks the small arteries supplying the fibroids, so that they shrink over the following months. It is performed through a small puncture in the wrist or groin, and preserves the uterus. Whether it is suitable depends on the size, number and position of the fibroids, and on your own plans, and is assessed individually alongside your gynaecologist.
Yes. Varicocele can be treated by embolization, in which the abnormal vein is blocked through a small puncture rather than through a surgical incision. It is carried out under local anaesthetic and generally allows a quick return to normal activity.
Ablation destroys a tumour using heat, cold or other energy delivered through a fine needle placed under imaging guidance, without removing it surgically. It is used for certain liver, kidney and other tumours, and suitability depends on the size, number and position of the tumours — a decision usually made with the oncology team.
Please bring all relevant scans and reports (ultrasound, CT, MRI or angiography), previous operation and discharge summaries, recent blood tests including kidney function, and a list of your current medications — particularly any blood thinners, which may need adjusting before the procedure.
