About Dr. Maryam

Dr. Maryam is a general surgeon with fellowship training in breast oncology, and heads a dedicated Breast Unit. Her practice focuses on the surgical management of breast cancer and benign breast disease.

She qualified in medicine at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom in 2011, supported by a scholarship from Oman’s Ministry of Higher Education, and completed her internship at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. She began general surgery training with the Oman Medical Specialty Board before continuing her residency at McGill University in Canada, and was awarded the specialty and fellowship certificates of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) in 2021.

She then completed a Breast Oncology Fellowship at McMaster University in Canada, again on a Ministry of Higher Education scholarship, returning to Oman in 2022. She was appointed Head of the Breast Unit in May 2025.

Dr. Maryam is active in surgical education and research. She serves as a partial-load faculty trainer for the Oman Medical Specialty Board, has taught medical students and junior residents, and sat on the McGill General Surgery Resident Committee. Her published research examines outcomes in anticoagulated patients undergoing emergency colorectal surgery, presented at SAGES and published in Surgical Endoscopy. She currently leads ongoing research into local recurrence and survival after breast surgery in young women with breast cancer in Oman.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Maryam is a general surgeon with fellowship training in breast oncology. Her practice focuses on the surgical treatment of breast cancer and the assessment and management of benign breast conditions such as lumps, pain, cysts and nipple discharge.
Most breast lumps are not cancer, but any new lump should be assessed. Assessment usually combines an examination, imaging (ultrasound and, depending on your age, mammography) and, where needed, a needle biopsy. Several of these steps can often be completed in the same visit.
Breast-conserving surgery removes the cancer along with a margin of surrounding tissue while keeping the rest of the breast; mastectomy removes the whole breast. Which is appropriate depends on the size and position of the tumour relative to the breast, on imaging findings and on your own preferences, and is discussed fully before any decision is made.
The sentinel node is the first lymph node the breast drains to. Removing and examining it shows whether cancer has spread to the underarm lymph nodes, and often avoids the need to remove all of them — which reduces the risk of arm swelling and stiffness afterwards.
Oncoplastic surgery combines removal of the cancer with techniques that reshape the remaining breast tissue, aiming for a better cosmetic result without compromising the cancer operation. Whether it is suitable depends on the tumour and on breast size and shape.
Please bring any previous mammograms, ultrasound or MRI scans and their reports, any biopsy or pathology results, previous operation notes, a list of your current medications, and details of any family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
