About Dr. Mohamed

Dr. Mohamed is a Senior Consultant in Interventional Cardiology at Muscat Private Hospital. He qualified in 1989 and has practised as a consultant cardiologist since 2001, holding board certification in cardiology in both Canada and the United States.

Dr. Mohamed graduated MBBS with distinction from the Arabian Gulf University in 1989, where he was awarded the gold medal, and completed his internship and early medical training at the Royal Hospital in Muscat. He then trained in Canada: internal medicine residency at McGill University from 1994, a cardiology fellowship at McGill from 1997, and a further year of interventional cardiology training at the Montreal Heart Institute in 2000–01. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the Canadian Board of Internal Medicine, the Canadian and American Boards of Cardiology, and is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Cardiology.

His clinical work spans complex coronary intervention and structural heart disease. Dr. Mohamed directed the Echocardiography and Non-Invasive Laboratory at the Royal Hospital from 2003 to 2015, and went on to lead the structural heart disease programme at the National Heart Center from 2015 to 2025 — the service through which transcatheter valve procedures are delivered in Oman. His procedural practice covers transcatheter aortic valve implantation, balloon valvuloplasty, primary angioplasty for heart attack including in cardiogenic shock, chronic total occlusions, bifurcation and left main disease, and complex high-risk indicated procedures for patients who are not candidates for open surgery.

Dr. Mohamed has published around sixty peer-reviewed papers in indexed journals and is a co-author of the Oman Heart Association's national guidelines on acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation and hypertension. He has served as Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Sultan Qaboos University, as programme director for both the internal medicine training programme and the adult cardiology fellowship at the Oman Medical Specialty Board, and on the scientific committee of the Arab Board of Cardiology.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Mohamed treats coronary artery disease in all its forms — angina, heart attack and acute coronary syndromes — including the more difficult patterns such as chronic total occlusion, bifurcation disease and left main disease. He also treats structural and valve disease, most commonly aortic stenosis, along with heart failure, cardiomyopathy and infiltrative conditions such as cardiac amyloidosis, and manages high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the cardiac complications of diabetes.
Dr. Mohamed performs diagnostic coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention, including primary angioplasty for heart attack and for patients in cardiogenic shock. For heavily calcified arteries he uses rotational atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy, and he uses intravascular imaging (IVUS, OCT) and pressure-wire measurement (FFR, iFR) to guide treatment. On the structural side he performs transcatheter aortic valve implantation and balloon aortic valvuloplasty. He also carries out transthoracic, transoesophageal and dobutamine stress echocardiography.
Two things, built over a long career. First, echocardiography and non-invasive cardiac imaging — he ran the Royal Hospital's echocardiography laboratory for twelve years. Second, structural heart disease, which he led as a programme at the National Heart Center for a decade. Alongside both, he has practised complex coronary intervention since completing interventional training at the Montreal Heart Institute in 2001.
CHIP stands for complex high-risk indicated procedures. These are catheter treatments offered to patients whose coronary disease is difficult to treat — heavily calcified or completely blocked arteries, disease at branch points or in the left main artery, or a weak heart muscle — and who are often not suitable for open bypass surgery. They take longer than a routine angioplasty, sometimes need extra equipment to support the circulation, and carry higher risk, which is discussed in detail beforehand.
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation is a way of replacing a narrowed aortic valve without open-heart surgery. A new valve is passed to the heart through a blood vessel, usually in the groin, and opened inside the old one. It is used mainly in patients for whom surgery would carry a high risk. Suitability is decided by a heart team, not by one doctor alone, and depends on scans of the valve and the blood vessels as well as your general health.
Dr. Mohamed holds an MBBS with distinction from the Arabian Gulf University, where he was gold medallist. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the Canadian Board of Internal Medicine, and the Canadian and American Boards of Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC).
Dr. Mohamed qualified in 1989 and has worked as a consultant cardiologist since 2001, following seven years of postgraduate training in Canada. He has led both an echocardiography laboratory and a national structural heart disease programme, and has trained cardiologists in Oman as a fellowship programme director.
No. Many patients seen for chest pain or a heart murmur do not need any procedure, and are managed with medication, treatment of risk factors and regular review. Where a narrowing is found, whether to treat it depends on which artery is involved, how severe it is and what symptoms you have — for some patients medication or bypass surgery is the better answer. Valve procedures are decided in the same way, by a team. Dr. Mohamed will explain what the tests show, what each option involves and what the risks are before anything is agreed.
