About Dr. Mohammed

Dr. Mohammed is a Senior Consultant Otolaryngologist and Head and Neck Surgeon, practising part-time at Muscat Private Hospital, where he holds two clinics and one operating session each week.

He qualified in medicine at Dow Medical College in Karachi and began his otolaryngology training in the United Kingdom in 1983, holding registrar and senior house officer posts in Scotland and England. He was awarded the Diploma in Otolaryngology (DLO) by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1986 and the FRCS by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1987. He is on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom for otolaryngology.

In 1989 he joined the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi as a faculty member, where he helped establish the otolaryngology residency programme. He moved to Oman in 1997 as Senior Consultant in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and Communication Disorders at Al Nahda Hospital, a post he held until 2022, alongside an appointment as Honorary Senior Lecturer at Sultan Qaboos University School of Medicine.

Dr. Mohammed practises all aspects of otolaryngology, with a particular interest in head and neck surgery and rhinology. During his hospital career his head and neck work included the surgical management of oral cavity and laryngeal cancer, parotid and salivary gland surgery, and participation in the head and neck multidisciplinary cancer team.

He has contributed substantially to otolaryngology training in Oman. He helped establish the residency programme under the Oman Medical Specialty Board, has served on its scientific committee since 2005, and has chaired its curriculum subcommittee over the same period, leading the move to a competency-based curriculum. He is an examiner for the Arab Board in Otolaryngology, and has taught on and directed the Oman Head and Neck cadaver dissection course, which he helped start in 2009.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Mohammed is a Senior Consultant Otolaryngologist (ENT surgeon) treating conditions of the ear, nose and throat in both adults and children, with a particular interest in head and neck surgery and in nose and sinus disease. This includes hearing problems and ear infections, sinus and nasal blockage, tonsil and adenoid problems, voice and throat conditions, neck lumps and salivary gland disease.
Grommets are small ventilation tubes placed in the eardrum to drain fluid and restore hearing where glue ear has persisted and is affecting hearing, speech or schooling. Many children improve without surgery, so a period of observation with a hearing test is usual first. If grommets are needed the procedure is short and generally carried out as a day case.
Tonsillectomy is usually considered where throat infections are frequent and severe enough to disrupt school or work over a sustained period, or where enlarged tonsils cause obstructed breathing during sleep. It is not recommended for occasional sore throats. The decision depends on how often infections occur and how much they affect daily life.
Yes. Most neck lumps are benign, and many are enlarged lymph nodes responding to infection. But a lump that persists beyond a few weeks, grows, or occurs alongside hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss should be assessed promptly. Assessment usually involves examination, imaging and sometimes a needle biopsy.
Endoscopic sinus surgery is carried out entirely through the nostrils using a fine telescope, with no external incisions or facial scars. It opens blocked sinus drainage pathways in chronic sinusitis that has not responded to medical treatment. Medical treatment is normally tried thoroughly first.
Please bring any previous hearing tests, scans and reports, details of previous ENT surgery, a list of your current medications including nasal sprays and drops, and a note of how long the symptoms have been present and what makes them better or worse.
