About Dr. Mohammed

Dr. Mohammed is a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery, lower limb joint replacement and orthopaedic trauma. He completed two advanced fellowships in the United Kingdom in hip revision and lower limb arthroplasty at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital, and in lower limb arthroplasty and trauma at Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Macclesfield Hospital and brings that international training to evidence-based practice in Oman.

He qualified in Medicine at Sultan Qaboos University, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, and holds FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and MRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He also completed an MPhil in Orthopaedic Biology at the University of Liverpool, where his research examined the inflammatory mechanisms underlying knee osteoarthritis work supported by the Roaf Award research grant and presented at major international meetings including SICOT, OARSI and the British Hip Society.

Much of his surgical practice concerns joint replacement: both first-time (primary) hip and knee replacement and the considerably more demanding revision surgery required when an existing replacement wears, loosens, becomes infected or fails. He also manages periprosthetic joint infection, performs knee arthroscopy and osteotomy around the knee for alignment problems, and treats orthopaedic trauma.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Mohammed is closely involved in medical education training orthopaedic residents and medical students, serving on examination committees, and contributing to national orthopaedic development. He organised the first Cadaveric Knee Arthroplasty Workshop held in Oman. He has published in peer-reviewed international journals and speaks regularly at international congresses. He consults in Arabic and English.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Principally hip and knee conditions — osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis of the hip, inflammatory arthritis, knee malalignment, and problems with existing joint replacements — together with fractures and orthopaedic trauma of the lower limb.
Revision surgery replaces a hip or knee implant that has worn, loosened, become infected or failed. It is technically more demanding than first-time replacement because bone stock may be reduced and the existing implant must be removed safely. Dr. Mohammed completed a dedicated UK fellowship in hip revision and lower limb arthroplasty.
Not necessarily. Many patients are managed without surgery, and for some, a realignment procedure such as an osteotomy around the knee is more appropriate than a replacement, particularly in younger patients. The right option depends on your symptoms, your imaging and your activity level, and is discussed at consultation.
It is an infection involving a joint replacement. It requires specialist management, which may include prolonged antibiotic treatment and surgery to clean or replace the implant. This is one of Dr. Mohammed’s stated areas of expertise.
