About Dr. Obaid

Dr. Obaid is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery, sports medicine, arthroscopy and joint preservation. His training combines the Oman Medical Specialty Board with a full orthopaedic surgery residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, where he served as Chief Resident and obtained his FRCSC certification in 2023.

He then completed two consecutive fellowships at Dalhousie University: the first in hip and knee arthroplasty and reconstruction, and the second in knee preservation, sports medicine and arthroscopy. This dual training is unusual and clinically useful, since it spans both ends of the treatment pathway — preserving and repairing a patient’s own joint where that is possible, and replacing it where it is not. He also trained in MAKO robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery.

Dr. Obaid has gained wide clinical experience across Canada and Oman, including locum orthopaedic practice at Dartmouth General Hospital in Nova Scotia and The Moncton Hospital in New Brunswick. His surgical practice covers total hip and knee replacement, revision joint replacement, ACL and other ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair and cartilage procedures, knee and hip arthroscopy, and complex knee preservation surgery.

He is actively involved in teaching medical students and orthopaedic residents, having lectured at the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, and has contributed to peer-reviewed orthopaedic publications, research projects and international presentations. He was named Best Fellow at Dalhousie University for 2024–2025. Dr. Obaid consults in Arabic and English.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Hip and knee conditions across the age range — sports injuries, ACL and ligament injuries, meniscal and cartilage damage, hip pain in younger patients, arthritis of the hip and knee, and problems with existing joint replacements.
It refers to procedures that repair or protect your own knee joint rather than replacing it — for example cartilage procedures, meniscus repair and realignment surgery. It is often the preferred option for younger and more active patients, where a replacement would be premature.
The surgeon plans the operation on a three-dimensional model of your joint, and a robotic arm assists in preparing the bone and positioning the implant precisely to that plan. The surgeon performs the operation throughout; the robot is a guidance tool. Dr. Obaid trained in MAKO robotic-assisted joint replacement.
That depends on your age, activity level, the extent of the damage and your imaging. Dr. Obaid is fellowship-trained in both joint preservation and joint replacement, so both options can be assessed and discussed in the same consultation.
