About Dr. Salim

Dr. Salim is a Senior Consultant Urologist and one of the founding figures of urology in the Sultanate of Oman, with more than 40 years of surgical experience. A pioneer who introduced lithotripsy, laser endourology, and other landmark urological services to the country, he has served patients at Muscat Private Hospital as Visiting Senior Consultant for 15 years, and was awarded the Medal of Excellence by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 1995 in recognition of his service.

Educated in the United Kingdom, Dr. Salim earned his MB ChB from Liverpool University in 1975 and his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1979, completing his higher surgical training in urology through the Glasgow post-fellowship rotation (JCHST, equivalent to the UK Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training), with paediatric urology training at the renowned Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool. He remains registered with the UK General Medical Council.

Returning to Oman as Consultant Urologist at the Armed Forces Hospital in 1987, he built its urology department into what was regarded as the country's leading urological unit — establishing Oman's first lithotripsy service in 1991, introducing Holmium laser endourological surgery in 1999 and transurethral microwave thermotherapy in 2004 — while rising to Head of Medical Services with the rank of Brigadier and Director of the Armed Forces Medical Services. He then served the Royal Hospital, Oman's largest tertiary referral center, as Senior Consultant Urologist and Head of Department (2006–2020) and Director of Surgery (2011–2020), retiring from government service in 2020.

Dr. Salim is the editor of the Springer textbook “Urological Cancer Management” (2015), the author of 22 publications in reputable international journals spanning paediatric stone disease to urologic oncology, a longtime examiner for the Intercollegiate MRCS of the UK Royal Colleges, former Senior Clinical Lecturer at Sultan Qaboos University, and founder of the inaugural Oman International Urological Conference (2011). Patients know him for something simpler: nearly five decades of calm, meticulous surgical judgment.
