About Dr. Santosh

Dr. Santosh is a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon and a Visiting Consultant at Muscat Private Hospital. He is the former Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Khoula Hospital, Ministry of Health, Oman.

Dr. Santosh completed his postgraduate studies at Goa Medical College, affiliated to the University of Bombay, and his initial neurosurgical training at J.J. Hospital in Mumbai. He then trained further in neurosurgery in the United Kingdom, and holds a certificate of training from the Society of British Neurological Surgeons and Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons.

Before joining Khoula Hospital, he worked regularly in the UK as a Locum Consultant Neurosurgeon at Morriston Hospital in Swansea and the Royal Free Hospital in London, spending three months each year there. At Khoula Hospital he developed the current set-up of the National Neurosurgical Centre.

His surgical work covers both the spine and the brain: spinal decompression and laminectomy for nerve compression, craniotomy for conditions inside the skull, cranioplasty to restore the skull after earlier surgery or injury, and surgery at the base of the skull.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Santosh treats conditions of the spine and the brain. In the spine, that includes slipped discs, sciatica and spinal stenosis causing nerve compression. In the brain and skull, it includes brain and skull base tumours, head injuries that need surgery, and skull defects left by earlier surgery or injury.
No. Many disc and spine problems improve with medication, physiotherapy or injections. Surgery is usually considered when these treatments have not helped, or when nerve compression is causing weakness, numbness or loss of function. Dr. Santosh will explain whether surgery is likely to help in your case.
A laminectomy removes part of the bone at the back of a vertebra, called the lamina, to make more room for the spinal cord and nerves. It is used to relieve pressure from spinal stenosis or other causes of nerve compression, and can ease leg or arm pain, numbness and weakness.
In a craniotomy, the surgeon temporarily removes a section of the skull, called a bone flap, to reach the brain, then usually puts it back at the end of the operation. Sometimes the bone flap cannot be replaced straight away, for example after swelling from a head injury. A later operation called a cranioplasty restores the skull, using the original bone or a shaped implant.
Skull base surgery treats tumours and other conditions on the underside of the brain, where the skull meets the face and neck. This area contains important nerves and blood vessels, so these operations are planned in detail using MRI and CT scans.
