About Dr. Yahya

Dr. Yahya is a Consultant Radiologist with ten years in radiology and paediatric imaging. He works as a Paediatric Radiologist and Paediatric Interventional Radiologist in the Radiology Department at the Royal Hospital in Muscat.

He completed four years of general radiology training with the Oman Medical Specialty Board, and then undertook two subspecialty fellowships in Canada: a Paediatric Radiology Fellowship at the University of Calgary, and a Paediatric Interventional Radiology Fellowship at the University of Toronto.

His diagnostic work spans radiography, ultrasound, MRI, CT and fluoroscopy in both adults and children. On the interventional side he performs image-guided biopsy and drainage, sclerotherapy for vascular malformations, intra-articular steroid injection, and the full range of central venous access procedures, including PICC lines, tunnelled catheters and implanted ports.

Dr. Yahya is a senior trainer on the Oman Medical Specialty Board radiology training programme, and has taken part in conferences, workshops and courses nationally and internationally, both to develop his own practice and to share knowledge with colleagues at other institutions.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A paediatric radiologist is a radiologist with additional training in imaging infants, children and adolescents. Children are not small adults — their anatomy, the conditions they develop and the way they tolerate scans all differ, and imaging needs to be adapted accordingly, including keeping radiation doses as low as possible.
Paediatric interventional radiology uses imaging to guide treatments through very small punctures rather than open surgery. In children this includes taking biopsies, draining collections, treating vascular malformations and placing long-term intravenous lines — procedures that would otherwise often require an operation.
Ultrasound and MRI use no ionising radiation. X-ray, CT and fluoroscopy do, and are used when the information they provide is needed for your child’s care, with the dose kept as low as reasonably achievable and settings adjusted for a child’s size. Each request is reviewed to make sure the scan chosen is the right one.
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a medicine directly into an abnormal cluster of veins or lymphatic channels under imaging guidance, causing it to shrink and scar down. It is a treatment for venous and lymphatic malformations and often avoids open surgery, though more than one session may be needed.
Both are ways of giving treatment into a large vein over weeks or months, so that repeated needles are not required. A PICC is inserted through a vein in the arm; a port sits entirely under the skin and is accessed with a needle when needed. They are commonly used for chemotherapy, long courses of antibiotics or prolonged intravenous nutrition.
The department will explain any preparation when you book — some scans require fasting or a full bladder, and some procedures require sedation or a general anaesthetic. Please bring previous scans and reports, a list of medications, and details of any allergies. Telling your child what to expect in simple terms beforehand usually helps a great deal.
